Micro - Cleanliness

Micro-cleanliness analysis is used to evaluate contamination in the grain structure of steel. Contaminants, inclusions and foreign material in the grain structure will negatively affect the properties of steel.

An accurate micro-cleanliness analysis can help the manufacturer determine the characteristics of their raw materials, the effectiveness of their processes and the quality of their finished products.

To perform the analysis, the technician cross-sections, mounts, polishes and etches the specimen to reveal its longitudinal grain structure. A photomicrograph is photomicrograph is created at 100x magnification. The image is compared to standardized charts to make a determination of the sulfides, oxides and silicates present in the specimen.
